Srinagar, Dec 25: A dense layer of fog enveloped Srinagar on Monday morning, disrupting normal life in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The thick fog led to reduced visibility, resulting in fewer vehicles on the roads. Those that were in operation moved cautiously at a slow pace, their fog lights and headlights illuminated to prevent accidents.
According to a Meteorological (Met) official, the visibility in the capital city was measured at 91 meters at 8:30 am. The weather conditions in Srinagar are part of the ongoing ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ the 40-day harsh winter period in the Kashmir valley. Although ‘Chillai-Kalan’ concludes on January 30, winter persists, transitioning into a 20-day-long period known as ‘Chillai-Khurd’ from January 30 to February 19, followed by a 10-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) from February 20 to March 1.
The Met official further informed that the weather is expected to remain generally dry until December 26. Following this, generally cloudy weather is anticipated with the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches on December 27. From December 28-31, the forecast indicates generally dry weather, with no significant weather activity expected until the end of December.
Looking ahead to the beginning of January, the weather is projected to be generally cloudy from January 1-3, with a chance of light rain or snow at scattered places. The overall weather outlook suggests a relatively calm period until the end of December, with potential precipitation in the form of rain or snow as the new year commences.
