New Delhi, Jan 5 – The Election Commission (EC) is set to evaluate the readiness of states for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, commencing its review with visits to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu next week.
The Commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and comprising Election Commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel, will conduct assessments in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu from January 7 to 10. Prior to the visit, deputy election commissioners will provide detailed briefings to the full commission on preparations in the two states on January 6.
Deputy election commissioners have already visited nearly all states to supervise preparations for the Lok Sabha polls. The customary practice involves the EC touring states before assembly or Lok Sabha elections to engage with political parties, senior police and administrative officials, and assess the ground-level poll machinery.
However, it remains uncertain whether the EC will visit all states and union territories, as it may skip those where assembly polls were recently held. In 2019, the Lok Sabha elections were announced on March 10 and conducted in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, with the vote count taking place on May 23.
