The Valley also grappled with a severe and dry cold wave. Jammu city endured its coldest night of the season, reaching 4.1 degrees Celsius. Other recorded minimum temperatures include Katra at 5.6, Batote at 2.3, Bhaderwah at minus 0.3, and Banihal at minus 0.6. In Leh town, located in Ladakh, the temperature plummeted to a bone-chilling minus 12.8.
The ongoing 40-day-long period known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ which began on December 21 and extends until January 30, has so far remained dry without any snowfall. The ‘Chillai Kalan’ is crucial for Kashmir, as heavy snowfall during this period replenishes perennial water reservoirs in the higher reaches. Lakes, rivers, streams, and springs depend on these snow reserves to sustain water levels during the summer months.
Concerns arise if there is insufficient snowfall during the remaining days of ‘Chillai Kalan,’ as this may impact the water supply in Kashmir. The region relies on the snow accumulated in the mountains to ensure an adequate supply of water for various water bodies.
