Srinagar, Mar 22: The felling of a picturesque avenue of trees at Srinagar’s Amar Singh College has sparked outrage among residents, who mourn the loss of the trees synonymous with the college’s identity. The trees, which had stood for decades and were part of the college’s charm, were cut down as part of a “major makeover” project. Former Mayor of Srinagar, Junaid Mattu, expressed his dismay, stating, “The person who has taken this decision is extremely ill-suited to be involved even remotely with an educational institution. What an absolutely sad, sad spectacle. Tragic!” Established in 1913, Amar Singh College is renowned for its beauty and heritage. In the 1970s, Bollywood film “Kasme Vaadey” was shot on its premises. The canopy of tall green trees at the entrance of the college served as a guide to visitors to the heritage building. National Conference Chief Spokesman, Tanvir Sadiq, criticized the tree felling, calling it a disgrace. “While the world plants trees, we destroy our heritage? Those responsible must be held accountable,” he said. A former student lamented the loss, describing it as “butchering the aesthetics of the college.” “The so-called ‘development administration’ has cold-heartedly butchered the aesthetics of Amar Singh College, my beloved alma mater, by mercilessly axing the picturesque poplar tree tunnel,” wrote Junaid Dar on social media. He further pleaded, “Show some compassion, preserve these green tunnels and patches of nature that hold our memories. Remember, development shouldn’t come at the cost of erasing the essence of our past.” However, college authorities defended the decision, citing the aged trees’ threat and accidents. “The trees are being replaced by conifers as part of a massive plantation drive. Our aim is to beautify the college. We are also coming up with a state-of-the-art fountain,” said a college official.
