New Delhi, March 26: India has commenced an anti-dumping investigation into the import of aluminum foil, primarily used for packaging edible and food products, from China in response to a complaint filed by domestic industry players.
The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), the investigation arm of the commerce ministry, is leading the probe into the alleged dumping of aluminum foil from China. The application for the investigation was submitted by Hindalco Industries, Shyam Sel & Power Ltd, Shree Venkateshwara Electrocast, Ravi Raj Foils, GLS Foils Product, and LSKB Aluminium Foils on behalf of the domestic industry.
The applicants have claimed that there is evidence suggesting that the domestic industry has suffered injury due to the dumped imports from China. In response, the DGTR has initiated an anti-dumping investigation to examine the alleged dumping and assess the resulting material injury to the domestic industry.
If the investigation confirms that the dumping has indeed caused harm to domestic players, the DGTR may recommend the imposition of anti-dumping duties on the imported aluminum foil. The final decision to impose duties rests with the finance ministry.
Anti-dumping investigations are conducted by countries to determine whether their domestic industries have been adversely affected by a surge in low-cost imports. These duties are imposed under the multilateral framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to promote fair trade practices and create a level playing field for domestic producers compared to foreign competitors.
India has previously imposed anti-dumping duties on various products to address the issue of inexpensive imports from different countries, including China.
