Kolkata, Apr 9 : The Election Commission has opted to deploy GPS location tracking systems in all vehicles designated for polling operations in West Bengal, as confirmed by an official on Monday.
According to the official, communication regarding this initiative has been dispatched to the polling personnel.
“The GPS tracking system will be utilized to oversee the movement of EVMs and other polling materials from the distribution/dispersion center and receipt center (DCRC) to the polling station on the day preceding the elections. Additionally, it will ensure that no tampering occurs during transportation to the strong room after polling,” the official explained.
The electoral body has instructed the administration to promptly address any discrepancies observed, including interrogating the drivers of the respective vehicles and the personnel responsible for the EVMs.
In another development, the commission appointed Arnab Chatterjee, Joint Secretary in the School Education Department, as the Joint Chief Electoral Officer, succeeding Rahul Nath, as per an official order issued on Monday.
The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections in the state are scheduled to commence on April 19.
