Guwahati: The Election Commission announced the commencement of the nomination process for four Lok Sabha seats, including Guwahati, in Assam, slated for the third phase of polling, starting Friday.
The process kicked off with the issuance of notifications for the third phase nationwide. Voting in Guwahati, Barpeta, Dhubri, and Kokrajhar (ST) constituencies is scheduled for May 7.
According to the notification, the deadline for filing nominations is April 19, with scrutiny scheduled for the following day. Candidates can withdraw their candidature until April 22.
Vote counting will occur on June 4, in sync with the rest of the country.
In the prominent Guwahati constituency, BJP’s Bijuli Kalita Medhi, a vice president of Assam BJP and former president of the party’s women’s wing, is expected to face Congress newcomer Mira Barthakur Goswami, the president of Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress.
From the ruling front, AGP has fielded senior leader Phani Bhusan Choudhury, while Congress has nominated Deep Bayan. CPI(M) has named its lone MLA, Manoranjan Talukdar, for the Barpeta seat.
Rakibul Hussain, Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, will contest from Dhubri, challenging AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal and AGP’s Zabed Islam.
UPPL has nominated MLA Joyanta Basumatary for Kokrajhar (ST) constituency, with Congress backing Garjan Mushahary and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) fielding Kampa Borgoyary.
In the current Lok Sabha, the BJP holds nine seats in Assam, with allies AGP and UPPL lacking representation. Congress has three seats, while AIUDF has one, alongside an Independent candidate.
