SRINAGAR, Apr 15 :  Srinagar and surrounding regions in the Kashmir Valley experienced widespread light to moderate rainfall over the past 24 hours, accompanied by a fresh round of light snowfall in higher reaches, officials reported on Monday.

The continuous precipitation disrupted daily life, leading to a drop in temperatures and necessitating warmer clothing for locals and tourists alike. Many low-lying areas, including parts of Srinagar, were waterlogged due to the heavy rainfall, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents.

The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has forecasted continued cloudy weather throughout the day, with intermittent light rain or snow expected in higher reaches until the afternoon. However, a gradual improvement in weather conditions is anticipated thereafter.

Looking ahead, the forecast indicates cloudy weather with isolated light rain on April 16–17, while April 18–19 may see light rain and snowfall in higher regions accompanied by thunder and lightning.

From April 20 to April 25, generally dry weather is expected, although afternoon thundershower activity cannot be ruled out. In light of the inclement weather, the Meteorological Office has advised farmers to suspend agricultural operations until April 16.

Due to the prevailing weather conditions, temporary disruptions in surface transportation are possible in some higher reaches. Travelers and tourists are urged to plan their trips accordingly, as there is a risk of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in high-altitude areas.

According to data from the Meteorological Office, Srinagar received 27.6mm of rainfall, while other areas like Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kupwara, Kokernag, and Gulmarg also experienced significant precipitation in the past 24 hours.

Night temperatures in Srinagar dipped to 8.0 degrees Celsius, slightly above the normal average for this time of year. Meanwhile, daytime temperatures in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley remained notably cooler than usual, with variations of 5 to 9 degrees Celsius below the normal range.

In specific locations, such as Pahalgam, Kupwara, and Gulmarg, overnight temperatures were lower compared to the previous night, indicating the chilling effect of the ongoing weather conditions across the region.
