New Delhi, Apr 23 : The Congress escalated its criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent ‘redistribution of wealth’ comment, asserting that he fails to acknowledge that over 40 percent of the country’s wealth generated between 2012 and 2021 went to just one percent of the population. The party emphasized that only a government representing the INDIA bloc can achieve significantly more inclusive economic growth.
During a rally in Rajasthan on Sunday, Modi insinuated that a Congress-led government would redistribute wealth to “infiltrators” and families with more children, referencing former PM Manmohan Singh’s statement regarding the minority community’s claim on national resources.
In response, the Congress accused Modi of resorting to “lies” and “hate speech” to deflect attention from pressing issues, following perceived setbacks in the initial phase of the Lok Sabha polls.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh highlighted on X, “The Prime Minister will never tell you that: More than 40% of the wealth created in the country from 2012 to 2021 has gone to just 1% of the population.” Additionally, he pointed out that approximately 64% of the total GST revenue is contributed by the poor, lower middle class, and middle class segments.
Ramesh alleged that a disproportionate amount of public assets and resources sold over the past decade benefited only a select few companies, leading to increased economic monopolization and inflation.
Moreover, he underscored the stark wealth disparity in India, with 21 billionaires collectively possessing more wealth than 70 crore Indians.
Ramesh reiterated the necessity for faster, more inclusive, and ecologically sustainable economic growth, emphasizing that only a government aligned with the INDIA bloc can deliver on these fronts.
