Srinagar, Jan 12 : The biting cold intensified in Srinagar as the city experienced freezing temperatures at minus 4 degrees Celsius, while Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 3.7 degrees Celsius on Friday.
Jammu witnessed the lowest minimum temperature of the season, hitting 3.7 degrees Celsius on Friday, coupled with the lowest maximum temperature at 8.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
Other regions in the Kashmir valley also felt the icy grasp of the cold, with Gulmarg recording minus 3.2 degrees Celsius and Pahalgam registering minus 5.3 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature. In the Ladakh region, Leh town braved minus 11.2 degrees Celsius, Kargil recorded minus 9.2 degrees Celsius, and Drass reported minus 11.5 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.
The temperature variations were notable in different parts of Jammu, where the city recorded 3.7 degrees Celsius, Katra experienced 6.2 degrees Celsius, Batote chilled at 4.5 degrees Celsius, Bhaderwah shivered at 1.3 degrees Celsius, and Banihal reached minus 0.4 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.
The ongoing period of harsh winter cold, lasting for 40 days, commenced on December 21 and will persist until January 30. Despite this traditionally being a time of substantial snowfall, the region has experienced a dry spell so far.
The Meteorological Department provides a disheartening outlook, indicating that any significant snowfall is unlikely to occur until January 25. The residents brace themselves as the cold wave maintains its grip on the region.
