New Delhi, Jan 15 : India recorded 272 fresh cases of Covid, marking a decline in the number of active infections to 2,990, as per the health ministry’s update on Monday.

No new deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, highlighting a positive trend in the ongoing battle against the pandemic. The daily case count had initially dropped to double digits until December 5, 2023. However, a resurgence occurred following the emergence of a new variant and colder weather conditions.

On December 31, 2023, a single-day rise of 841 new cases was reported, representing 0.2 per cent of the peak cases recorded in May 2021. The majority of active cases, approximately 92 per cent, are currently under home isolation, indicating a trend of milder infections.

Official sources emphasized that the data available suggests that the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential rise in new cases, nor is it leading to a surge in hospitalization and mortality rates.

India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the Delta wave peaking during April-June 2021, reporting 4,14,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths on May 7, 2021. Since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, over 4.5 crore people have been infected, and over 5.3 lakh have succumbed to the infection across the country.

The recovery rate remains high, with over 4.4 crore individuals having recuperated from the disease, reflecting a national recovery rate of 98.81 per cent, according to the data available on the ministry’s website.

The vaccination drive continues, with a total of 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines administered in the country, marking a significant effort in mitigating the impact of the virus.
