Srinagar, Mar 14: Recent rains and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir have brought a fresh spell of wintry weather, with forecasts predicting continued precipitation from March 22-24.
According to a meteorological department official, the region experienced rainfall in the plains and fresh snowfall in higher reaches, notably Gulmarg, in the past 24 hours until 08:30 a.m. this morning. Srinagar received 9.1mm of rainfall, while Qazigund recorded 24.6mm, Pahalgam 15.6mm (including 3 cms of snow), Kupwara 14.9mm, and Kokernag 18.1mm. In addition, Jammu received 1.6mm of rain, Banihal 44.8mm, Batote 43.6mm, Katra 4.6mm, and Kathua 14.6mm. Gulmarg, a popular skiing destination, received 22 cms of fresh snowfall during the same period.
Temperature-wise, there has been a drop in most places across the region. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 4.4°C, which is 0.7°C above normal for this time of year. Qazigund registered a minimum of 1.8°C, Pahalgam minus 1.3°C, Kokernag 1.3°C, and Kupwara 1.2°C. Meanwhile, Gulmarg recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.8°C, which is 1.5°C below normal. Jammu recorded a minimum of 13.5°C, while Banihal recorded 3.0°C, Batote 2.2°C, and Bhaderwah 3.6°C.
The meteorological department has predicted generally dry weather until March 20, followed by another wet spell from March 22-24. This forecast indicates that the wintry conditions in the region are likely to continue, affecting both the plains and higher elevations.
