New Delhi : The National Commission for Women (NCW) on March 25 urged the Election Commission to take stringent action against Congress leaders Supriya Shrinate and H.S. Ahir for their disparaging remarks directed at actress Kangana Ranaut, who is contesting as the BJP candidate from the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency.

Ms. Shrinate’s Instagram post containing objectionable comments about Ranaut has been taken down from her Instagram profile. Similarly, Mr. Ahir, State joint coordinator of Kisan Congress, also made derogatory statements against Ranaut.

In response to this, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Election Commission seeking action against both Ms. Shrinate and Mr. Ahir. The NCW expressed its dismay over the behavior of Shrinate and Ahir, emphasizing that such conduct is intolerable and undermines the dignity of women.

In a social media post, the NCW stated, “National Commission for Women is appalled by the disgraceful conduct of Ms. Supriya Shrinate and Mr. H.S. Ahir, who made lewd and derogatory remarks about @KanganaTeam on social media. Such behavior is intolerable and goes against the dignity of women. @sharmarekha has sent a letter to the Election commissioner of India demanding an immediate and strict action against them. Let’s uphold respect and dignity for all women. #RespectWomen.”

Kangana Ranaut herself responded to Ms. Shrinate’s remarks, asserting that she has portrayed diverse roles throughout her career, emphasizing the dignity every woman deserves.

“Dear Supriya ji, in the last 20 years of my career as an artist I have played all kinds of women. From a naive girl in Queen to a seductive spy in Dhaakad, from a goddess in Manikarnika to a demon in Chandramukhi, from a prostitute in Rajjo to a revolutionary leader in Thalaivii,” Ranaut tweeted.

In her defense, Ms. Shrinate clarified that several individuals have access to her Facebook and Instagram accounts, and someone among them posted an extremely inappropriate comment. She promptly removed the post upon becoming aware of it, stating that she is incapable of making personal and indecent remarks towards any woman. She expressed her desire to investigate how the incident occurred.
