New Delhi, Dec 30: India witnessed a significant surge in COVID-19 cases as 743 new infections were reported on Saturday, marking the highest single-day rise in 225 days, according to the Union health ministry. The number of active cases has reached 3,997.
In the past 24 hours, seven new fatalities were reported, including three from Kerala, two from Karnataka, and one each from Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu. The increase in daily cases follows a trend of rising numbers, attributed to cold weather conditions and the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant.
While the daily cases had dropped to double digits until December 5, the recent surge raises concerns. During the peak of the pandemic in early 2020, daily numbers were in the lakhs. Over the course of four years, more than 4.5 crore people have been infected, resulting in over 5.3 lakh deaths across the country.
The recovery rate remains high, with over 4.4 crore people having recuperated from the disease, contributing to a national recovery rate of 98.81 per cent, as reported by the health ministry’s website. The country has administered 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines, reflecting the ongoing vaccination efforts.
