New Delhi, January 6: India reported a daily increase of 774 COVID-19 cases, maintaining an active case count of 4,187, as per the latest update from the Union health ministry on Saturday. Within a 24-hour period, two fatalities were recorded, one each from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
Until December 5, daily cases were in double digits, but they began to escalate again, possibly influenced by cold weather conditions and the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant, JN.1. The highest single-day spike after December 5 was 841 cases on December 31, 2023, accounting for 0.2% of the peak cases reported in May 2021.
Of the 4,187 active cases, over 92% are currently recovering under home isolation. Officials note that available data indicates that the JN.1 variant is not causing a significant increase in new cases, hospitalizations, or mortality.
India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the Delta wave peaking in April-June 2021, reporting 4,14,188 cases and 3,915 deaths on May 7, 2021. Since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, over 4.5 crore people have been infected, and more than 5.3 lakh have died in the country.
The recovery rate is at 98.81%, with over 4.4 crore individuals having recuperated from the disease. The country has administered 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines, according to the health ministry’s website.
